From April 1995 through March 2000, Mutant Pop Records produced 7" vinyl records (a.k.a. "EPs," "Singles," "45s"), documenting the US pop-punk underground. First pressings were issued on colored vinyl -- many of which are now eagerly-sought collectors items. The records featured a common sleeve design, featuring a band photo on the front with a colored MP Logo "bubble," a miniature rant by label-dude T. Chandler on the back, and printing inside (often with song lyrics).

MUTANT POP SHORT RUN COMPACT DISCS (38 made)

These were CD-R discs, burned onto commercially-produced blanks of a common design, with the band info, title, catalog number, and disc number written in by hand with a Sharpie pen. The format was intented to have a running time of from 10 to 25 minutes -- somewhat longer than a vinyl EP, but not as long as a full-length CD. The format was initially accepted, but the onslaught of releases combined with the release of a couple of dubious merit soured many on the format, bringing an end to the series and the label. SRCDs were initially released from Dec. 1999 until May 2002, with sporadic production of some titles in dribs and drabs for several years thereafter.

MP-1001 -- THE REMOTES "Bitch, Bitch, Bitch" SRCD

RELEASED: X (part of "Wave 9")

FIRST BLANKS USED: X

This release came relatively late, despite the low catalog number. It was orginally scheduled to be ATTACK FISH "The Ones That Got Away," a pop-punk band featuring Brandon from SIDECAR which recorded c. 1994. The project never released, probably due to lack of a cover photo, and the number sat unused until it was finally "filled up" with THE REMOTES. Note that this disc includes a black and white VIDEO of the band -- very punk rock!

MP-1002 -- THE DROPOUTS "Puke" SRCD

RELEASED: X (part of "Wave 2")

FIRST BLANKS USED: X

MP-1003 -- TIC "The Ephemeral Harmony" SRCD

RELEASED: X (part of "Wave 2")

FIRST BLANKS USED: X

Many people cite this release as the epitome of everything that was wrong with the SRCD format -- an ill-chosen release outside of the label's sound, etc. The release is vilified far beyond the bounds of reasonable criticism. TIC was actually the first band that ever sent a demo CD-R to MP -- as opposed to a demo tape. That seemed really cool at the time and worthy of documentation. Now it's commonplace, but the band is documented nonetheless, for better or worse.

MP-1046 -- HANDGUN BRAVADO "Take Tomorrow" SRCD.

RELEASED: x

FIRST BLANKS USED: X

This was actually released by MP -- the final release. Only about 2 dozen were made, with sleeves run on an Epson ink-jet printer in an effort to eliminate the last onerous fixed cost of production, sleeve printing. Band leader Arne Cherkoss (UNDERHAND, ZOINKS!) was not amused and pulled the release within days, taking it to Mark Enoch's Knock Knock Records. This proved to be the merciful coup de grace delivered to a sloppy and ailing label. (It's fitting and symbolic that the guy I started the label with let me know when it was over, and I thank him for it.) Unfortunately, the ball was subsequently dropped on a whole host of projects (listed here) and the label name tarnished severely in the process. To the best of my knowledge, all of these discs were sold at a single HANDGUN BRAVADO show. It was never put into regular producton by MP. It's certainly the single rarest MP release. It is equally certain that no one cares.

BOOTLEG SHORT-RUN COMPACT DISCS (2 made)

(Who, me?) A small number of each were made and they were given away, not sold. Releasing these were two fantasies fulfilled... Sleeves of the Holly were made on an Epson ink jet printer, actual MP SRCD blanks were used for each.

1. THE CLASH Live

Manufactured in 2000.

Total of 76 copies made. Source of the tape was a bootleg album of a Clash radio show.

2. HOLLY AND THE ITALIANS Twenty Years Late CD

Manufactured in 2002.

Total of 81 copies made. Source of the recording was 7" and 12" vinyl which had inexplicably never made it to the CD format.

Note: Mutant Pop was also the source of the "wrong" B-side used by Killer Records of Pori, Finland, on their edition of the BORIS THE SPRINKLER "Drugs and Masturbation" record (used on the opaque green vinyl variant). This featured a live version of THE REZILLOS performing "Wooly Bully."
